Smoke Detectors in Frisco and Little Elm, Texas
Posted on February 2, 2011
If you want to keep your Frisco or Little Elm, Texas home safe you will want to make sure that you have a good smoke detector installed. It is a good idea to check your smoke detector regularly. You will also want to consider which type of smoke detector makes the most sense for your purposes.
One consideration is whether to get a battery operated or hard wired detector. Ideally, you would want to choose the option that is wired in, with a backup battery. This is not always possible; however, you may have to weight the risks of having a fire without electricity against the risks of having a fire when your smoke detector battery has died.
The next thing that you will need to consider is whether an ionization detector or a photoelectric detector is the best option. An ionization detector consists of two separate chambers. There is an ionization chamber as well as a source of ionizing radiation. The alarm is set up to go off when smoke enters into the ionization chamber. The detector works because the smoke particles attach to the ions inside of the detector. A plate located in the chamber typically uses these ions to conduct an electrical current. When the smoke particles attach the ions, it neutralizes them. This causes the electrical current to become blocked, which sets off the alarm.
Photoelectric detectors are a more advanced, and more expensive system. These use a light beam. When smoke enters the detector, it blocks the light beam. When the beam is blocked, it sets off the detector. This system is not as susceptible to small amounts of smoke, and will only go off in the case of a smoldering fire. This may be a better option for some people because it does not need to be reset as often.
Ionization detectors can sometimes even be set off from the smoke that is produced while you are cooking. While it might sound like this increased sensitivity makes an ionization chamber safer, it can actually have the opposite effect if you are not careful. If the alarm is set off when there is no real threat, you will need to shut it off. When this happens, many people will forget to turn it back on after the smoke clears, which can pose a threat to your family.
